I cannot think that HS2 is worth the money. So much emphasis is made on getting ‘business people’ whoever they are to and from the Midlands and London. I don’t think this arguament of Doris holds water. Remember we are now so very screen based, people are possibly prefering to fly and airports are usually easy road links, I’m not convinced of the HS2 arguament. Not ever a mention of goods needing to be transported, decades ago rail was important for this. Perhaps moves to help / aid road transport might be a better idea. Or better still getting the existing rail network to function as it should be, to focus more on local solutions, to open a few more local commuter lines to and from growing towns and into local cities would surely be a useful idea.
HS2 sounds silly, perhaps a diversion / news filler when in fact the big problem is exiting Europe, my heart bleeds for manufacturers whose worlds are being turned upside down, with probable bankruptcy or closure at the end of it. How else can it be, the USA most certainly does not want our goods, trump himself is hell-bent on protectionism and tariffs, oblivious to knowledge, expertise or history.
So many flaws with HS2 as highlighted this morning on bbc r4 news, lets list a few of my rambling poorly read ideas …
- HS2 terminals look to be separate from existing stations, its not just a question of walking to another platform.
- environmentally its tragic.
- a nonsensical reach for max upper speed on HS2 adds dramatically to final cost, massage it down a little and look at the saving!
- I don’t think there is the need for it, but I do concede it may take pressure away from existing networks, maybe … but where does this factor into the daily commute for the average person?
- we know fine well that with climate change we need to be closer to our work, to somehow eliminate travelling.
- the regions themselves all insist the money could be better spent locally.
It was quite ironic a few minutes later we have a news item say 0830’ish regarding the plight of the homeless and how a simple one room bedsit is so very important, we assume and hope getting people turned around again, getting them away from the desperate hopelessness of sleeping rough. No wonder mental health problems and drugs are rife. I also believe mentoring is so very important, methinks cuts after cuts have ground away so much that could be done. To NOT give them a bedsit and some basic mentoring IS to commit them to an early death.
Its my opinion social housing and council built property (when well done) is so vastly under-supplied. Now that would be a very good use of HS2 money.
I remember the silly move 20 years ago to send the weak and mentally ill or handicapped into the community ‘American style’ a cruel move indeed, disrupting and / or removing networks and socialisation to place the handicapped into bungalows and dwellings across the UK where boredom hardly starts to describe their pointlessness.
We don’t seem to be very good at ‘thinking’ do we?
I stop short of using the term ‘clever’ but one can see from this opinion piece in the UK Guardian that there is a distinct hidden agenda, a distinct cleverness in that the repulsive machinations of trump are in fact a ‘clever’ assault on everything good, wholesome, borne of experience and hard won rights, as if the clown and his crew are chipping away long into the night on whatever can be corroded or made substandard. As with Stephen Miller we have a Dominic Cummings.
trump laughs at the Law, barges belligerently Roy Cohn style through established measures and ‘civilised regards’ and he cares nothing for ordinary people, merely something to score points from on social media. I think at this point a low budget biopic would serve very well at providing illumination on this low-life, theres enough crazy truth to preclude ever having to ‘invent’ anything. His manner of movement, his body language tells so much and could be used to explain quite what the monster is in the White House.
trump tries to give the impression he is riding along with the common man but in fact its their back he is riding, its how he ‘got his ticket’ into the White House, an invented and phoney posture, ‘a put-on act’ to capture votes. It sickens me for instance in the UK when post election there is the analysis, the wringing of hands at the need to re-jig to alter the message, surely parties and MPs as we have here in the UK should be thinking of what is best for the country, not what will catch them votes and give them a ride into power.
Its very clever how trump has done this, knowing that a veneer thin gloss and brag will get him through any encounter, whether its face to face or social media in any form. As with all good con-men he makes you feel he is your friend.
I am privileged, we all are, to hear integrity and sharpness of mind. Theres no sleaziness here, no Cohn teaching a misfit how to handle and con his way through life.
My utmost respects to Mr Bobby Threesticks.
postscript: here below for instance is a model of unbiased reporting, to deal with the unvarnished facts. How very far removed from trumps own rhetoric. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/07/robert-mueller-testimony-latest-updates-190724004507548.html
A flash new diesel SUV in the supermarket and as happens so often the remaining nitwit in the SUV insists on the diesel engine continuing to run, I was away from my own small car and twenty minutes later he’s still got the running !!!
I think some form of bye-law banning this would be in order.
This always annoys me, diesel drivers parked at the supermarket yet the engine running. I was starting to get vocal, the driver oblivious, never mind, gave him a good peep on the horn as I pulled away and twenty yards further on spoke to total strangers … “Theres catastrophic global warming and for twenty minutes he’s been sat there with the engine running”!! Thankfully they agreed.
My own carbon footprint is improving, my walks and nature rambles happily closer to home, saves petrol too and since my washing machine broke down a couple of months ago i actually do prefer the simple manual activity of a plastic bucket. I have that ‘wonder-gizmo’ called a washing line and gravity drains my clothes and the breeze dries them, even on cold days its okay as long as not actual ice. Anyone that can should be encouraged to do likewise. there never has been a tumble drier here and these last few years it has always bugged me as to how long the washing machine took to spin. now, i don’t think i could tolerate its noise. i also do think that my towels seem cleaner and fresher by virtue of manual plastic bucket over electricity consuming washing machine.
What we now need to see is a reduction in street lighting and a reduction in needless use of security lighting for homes as well as industrial. Homeowners often have glaring security lighting for yards / gardens they never hardly enter and that no sane burglar would ever wish to go there ie the place is bare, bereft.
bbc r4 news tells us theres moves afoot here in the UK to be carbon neutral by 2050. Fine, if we are still here (which I personally doubt ie Arctic methane, etc) … but the cringing inadaquecy of the brief news piece at the top of the hour was that we “May have to turn the thermostat down to 19” and also that “We may have to eat less red meat” … wow talk about inadequate!
Ideas for reducing carbon foortprint …
- halve red meat consumption every two years, get inventive in the kitchen.
- ban diesels idling in car parks.
- wash a few items in the sink, get a washing line if feasible.
- drastically reduce street lighting / security lighting and home outdoor lighting say to one third.
- drastically reduce air flights, encourage limiting personal mobility from engine powered devices.
- limit acceleration on bigger SUV type vehicles on open roads / motorways.
- police more effectively forest elimination ie for red meat production.
- population control, a one child policy.
footnote: we read this morning how prescient tv presenter James Burke actually was, particularly the negative side of web and connectivity … https://www.indy100.com/article/james-burke-internet-politics-1985-video-viral-8894851
Increasingly i think the web is in fact the Entanglement … The Great Entanglement, to be spoken of in future generations such as the Enlightenment, a signal of change but this time its for the worse. We are heading toward a situation that we read predictions indicate a major part of world power generation will be consumed with online data surveillance / storage and whacko ‘get rich schemes’ as bitcoin.
We do something, some small activity and that alone warrants a followup posting and texting and endless selfies, I’m slightly guilty re this blogging but its mostly me writing to myself, collecting useful material and pushing forward, developing my ideas.
We are losing the point of what life is about, endless consumerism, mindless ‘enjoying’ viewing, sampling and nothing beyond; browsing the immediate. A major ‘de-tech’ would do us all good. Admittedly i realise business demands connectivity, thank God I can choose my own level, I have the benefit of having practical work to perform in a very old fashioned manner, that cannot easily be displaced or altered.
Yesterdays radio news tells us Uber being floated has never made a profit and possibly will never generate a profit. Be mindful its costs are being covered and salaries, fees, fixed and variable costs being met; but all the same asking punters to put money in to something that on the face of it generates no return on capital is again just plain whacko! When things such as this are happening its time to eliminate exposure to stock market fluctuations. I likewise dread the American crash once trumps shenaigans and inability with Economic Management comes home to roost. That little old thing called debt, a self proclaimed ‘King of Debt’ should NOT be President and his denigration and belittling of overseas trading partners is crass beyond belief, but hey … its djt !

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks her conscience when many turn aside and would rather not voice any criticism. A fine incisive mind, that can detect crusty old nonsense, unthinking bigotry and perpetuated un-earned privelige from a great distance.
Anyone that has a small asteroid named after them has to be worth knowing !
This world and particularly America needs clarity of thought, to ask for actions to be justified, for people to be held accountable for misleading and less than honourable intentions. Its was a fine moment to witness AOC make it plain and clear when questioning Michael Cohen a few weeks ago that trump deliberately misled and knowingly falsified figures, knowing how it would increase his financial positon with phoney over-valued assets and property for insurances purposes and wifully undervalued assets by huge amounts so as to minimize and falsify his tax position.
Well done Alexandria for making this plain and clear to us all.
We need role models, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an exemplary role model, donald j trump is not, yet the USA is saddled with him, literally saddled, he is riding America.
Thank goodness she is entering her prime, I extend my greatest heartfelt wishes to her continuing good work. A real person with real abilities and life experience, AOC majored in International Relations and Economics.
… good questions pitched to a most fascinating subject.
Only very occasionally do we meet someone as erudite, wide ranging, knowledgable and spirited and excited by his work as Prof. Kevin Anderson.
At 05:13 above for instance in the above (is an EXCELLENT guide to our impending problems and remember recorded at 2013) we have to reduce our energy consumption … please tell that to my idiot neighbour with often front door access light illuminated and generally always his rear security light blazing away … merely to illuminate his shit-hole useless non contributory patch of three times bulldozed ‘yard’ to use the American term. Strong language prompted by severe stupidity.
